CWDA's Public Awareness & Education Committee was established in 2002. Social Service Public Information Officers (or those who serve in that capacity along with other responsibilities) meet monthly in Sacramento to : develop and provide public awareness and education strategies, consult with and assist other CWDA committees, be a clearing house for public awareness education and materials, be a point of contact for state agency public information staff, provide networking opportunities for county PIOs, and provide media and crisis communication trainings for directors and their staff.

The committee primarily focuses on major policy issues. The committee may forward issues or recommendations to the Executive committee or the full Board of Directors.

The twenty smallest counties meet regularly to discuss policy and financial issues as they affect operations in small counties. Members share knowledge and experience with each other on issues of mutual concern. In addition, the committee meets with state staff to understand and discuss the impact of upcoming changes on smaller organizations. Issues that also impact the whole association are brought to the Board of Directors for discussion.
