Gov. Newsom’s Budget Preserves California’s Commitment to Most Vulnerable as Federal Threats Loom

Press release Carlos Marquez III

Sacramento, CA – The County Welfare Directors Association (CWDA) of California released the following statement from Executive Director Carlos Marquez III today on the release of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s 2025-26 state budget proposal:

“CWDA is grateful to Gov. Gavin Newsom for proposing a budget that maintains the state’s commitment to core health and human service programs that help millions of Californians keep a roof over their heads, nourish their children, provide a lifeline to fragile older adults, and support disaster response and recovery. The proposed budget maintains current levels of spending and does not call for any cuts to these vital services. The administration’s leadership in protecting our critical human services is especially reassuring as the most vulnerable children, families, and seniors face the most devastating impact under policies advocated by the incoming Trump administration.

“We look forward to working with the legislature to refine the governor’s proposal and identify new investments that protect the Californians who count on state safety net programs delivered by county human services agencies.”
