2018 CWDA Conference Presentations

The CWDA annual conference in 2018 was held at the Marriott in Anaheim from October 10 – 12. In between a packed schedule of breakout sessions, attendees were inspired and engaged by five keynote speakers:

CalWORKs and CalOAR:
Evaluating Our Engagement with Families

Improve general understanding of the CalOAR legislation, associated work group processes, and the resulting recommendations. Initiate county understanding of how the metrics align with an updated vision of CalWORKs program priorities and management strategies as supported by the state. Support counties in thinking forward to what CalOAR will mean for their counties and how to start the implementation process.

Every Child Needs the Support of Both Parents
The Importance of Child Support

This session will inform attendees on the value of the Child Support program as a poverty prevention program and foster relationships between county staff. Child Support is a key program in furtherance of family self-sufficiency and is a poverty solution. A relationship between program staff partnering with families is an effective approach to assisting families in becoming and saying self-sufficient.

As Told by the Members Who Led the Campaign

This presentation will elevate and highlight the learned lessons from CYC’s #FosterStability Campaign to the audience. CYC will present the survey results from their membership wide internal survey regarding placement, stability, share the toolkit and materials used to build political and personal will to focus on this topic.

A recent quasi-experimental design study indicated that at-risk families receiving home visitation were 173% less likely to enter the Child Welfare System than the comparison group.

This session will promote an understanding of how to frame your message so it results in media coverage. It covers key elements of a news story, how to work with reporters, strategies for handling client confidentiality/sensitive topics while still communicating your important messages, and leveraging media opportunities to tell your agency’s stories.

A State of Innovation
California's Adult Protections Services Program

California Adult Protective Services (APS) is known as a national leader in addressing abuse of elders and dependent adults. This workshop will highlight many of the recent innovations including: data collection that supports advocacy, development and delivery of core training to all APS social workers, APS involvement in three federal grants designed to enhance social work practice by measuring outcomes, and improving capacity assessments and addressing trauma.

#EMPOWERSBC:
Leveraging Video and Social Media to Overcome Poverty

In January 2018, San Bernardino County Human Services launched #EmpowerSBC during poverty awareness month in an effort to highlight the resources available to county residents that can ”empower” toward self-sufficiency.
